Meet at: Penrith Railway Station

Covering 140 miles and crossing the country from the Irish Sea to the North Sea, this is the most popular long distance cycle route in Britain and an ideal challenge for every cycling enthusiast. Staying in homely budget hotels, comfortable bunkhouses and hostels along the route, we’ll take advantage of disused railway tracks, cycle paths and minor roads to complete this three-day challenge.

We begin in Whitehaven on the Cumbrian coast and climb into the hills of the Lake District, stopping for the first night at the delightful village of Greystoke. The second day takes us through the lush Eden Valley, past sandstone villages and into the Northern Pennines, with some of the steepest climbs taking us up to the highest point of the route at 2,000 feet, before we arrive at our accommodation for the night in the village of Eastgate.

The final day of the challenge takes us through the old lead mining areas of Nenthead and Rookhope and then drop down into the Durham Dales. Arriving at Sunderland you can dip your front wheel in the North Sea with a real sense of achievement.
