A spectacular Passion Play has been held in the mountain village of Oberammergau in Bavaria every ten years since 1633, when the villagers of Oberammergau vowed that if they were spared from the plague that ravaged their village they would perform a play depicting the Passion of Christ from his entry into Jerusalem to his death and resurrection.
The Passion Play will be performed for the 41st time in 2010 by amateur actors born, or living in, Oberammergau. Over 2000 people, nearly half the population of the town, are involved in the play each decade. The script has changed little over the years and the music and choral performances, composed by Rochus Dedler between 1811 and 1820, are still used along with some contemporary additions by Markus Zwink.
Prior to the performance we can enjoy five nights in the Austrian Tyrol with opportunities to visit the historic Tyrolean capital of Innsbruck, Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and Tratzberg Castle, one of the most beautiful and spectacular castles in Europe. The trip culminates in a two night stay in Bavaria for the awe inspiring Passion Play.
