The city of Durham has a fascinating history stretching back over a thousand years. The first people to settle here were the followers of St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne and there has been a church on the site ever since.
The present day cathedral is one of the most impressive in the UK, and is a testament to the skill of those who built it. Together with the imposing castle built to protect it, these two magnificent structures have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city played an important part during the industrial era, when nearly every village in the county had a coal mine and the Durham Miners Heritage Centre tells the story of coal through the years.
The compact city centre is easy to get around, and the cobbled streets will give you a feel for the history of the city. The selection of museums, shops and galleries will provide you with plenty to do as you explore the city at your own pace.
